About Back Bay, MA
Back Bay is a well-known neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts. It was built on land that was once part of the Charles River, with construction starting in 1859. The area was created because there was a need for more luxury homes in the city. By around 1900, Back Bay was fully developed.
The neighborhood is famous for its beautiful Victorian brownstone homes, which are some of the best-preserved examples of 19th-century city design in the U.S. It also has many important buildings, like the Boston Public Library and Boston Architectural College.
Although Back Bay was originally planned as a place for homes only, commercial buildings were allowed starting in the 1890s. Today, it includes many office buildings, such as Boston’s tallest skyscraper, the John Hancock Tower. Back Bay is also a popular shopping area, especially on Newbury and Boylston Streets, and it has several large shopping centers and hotels.
The Neighborhood Association of the Back Bay says that the neighborhood is bordered by the Charles River to the north, Arlington Street to Park Square on the east, Columbus Avenue and Huntington Avenue on the south, and Charlesgate East on the west.
